Our Role
to provide sustainability on demand, a.k.a. first aid for sustainability
There are countless other service providers who can help shipowners (Paul) and maritime clients (Jeff) with sustainability. So what is our role? What makes us different, and unique compared to others? What is our role, in a world where there are so money others with so much more experience, people and power? Frankly put, we do something no one else does.
We provide ‘first aid for sustainability’, on demand. First aid means at concept design / feasibility study level. On demand means instantly, by means of intuitive tools using our tool + click = report trick. We do this for such a low-cost level, that it becomes hard (if not impossible) for others to compete with it.
We translate the wants of the shipowner into an on demand product that is easy to use, orders of magnitude cheaper and faster. We do not provide detailed design, but we do give on demand feasibility-level insights and thereby help to assist in (long term) strategic decision making (which measures to pursue, and which not).
The subsequent sections elaborate in more detail the value proposition, our role and how this is different than other service providers. Feel free to contact the helpdesk at any time for clarifications.
Sustainable Ships value proposition
The problem
As described in problems, the maritime industry is conservative, closed and it is hard if not impossible for clients to get easy access to information for their specific vessel. Shipowners simply want to focus on their work. For most, sustainability is not top of mind. Most of them lack time, resources, the manpower or an expensive sustainability advisor. They just want to focus on their operational tasks and not worry about sustainability. Unfortunately, they are face with more and more requirements and restrictions by clients, IMO and other governmental organizations to reduce their emissions and become ‘more sustainable’.
For most shipowners, sustainability is not on top of mind. Far from it. They lack time, knowledge, manpower or money to figure out how rules and regulations will impact their operations, even while clients, IMO and governments are imposing more and more restrictions.
Shipowners just want to focus on their work and not worry about sustainability, but there is no place where shipowners can get help on their specific vessel needs for a reasonable price.
The bottom lime? Most shipowners have no money, no time, no clarity for all matters related to sustainability.
The solution
Sustainable Ships is provides maritime sustainability on demand. It helps shipowners answer the important questions: what can you do? How can you do it? How much does it cost? It works as follows.
Clients use the Decarbonizer, an online tool to quickly asses operational profile, carbon reduction measures and costs. Upon leaving their email address, they will instantly receive a personalized Decarbonizer report. This is a guide or roadmap that provides insights into long-term decision making with regards to their vessel. We call this trick “Tool + Click = Report”, a freemium model which is highly uncommon in the maritime industry, but very common in other industries. The shipowner can then decide to use the helpdesk to clarify questions, or purchase access to the premium features or other products. All products and reports focus on ‘first aid for sustainability’, which is concept design or feasibility study level.
Sustainable Ships is an on demand consultancy hat provides maritime sustainability to make your life easier.
The trick is called '“Tool + Click = Report”, a freemium model that provides shipowners with instant insights.
Freemium tools and information can be used on the platform. Shipowners can always clarify at the free-to-use helpdesk, pr purchase premium features and products. It is important to keep the helpdesk free-to-use, as it is data on which new products can be based.
The benefits
Our clients do not pay for expensive advisors. They only pay for the advice. The freemium model and "Tool + Click = Report” trick will ensure that we can modularize and reduce the questions for a client. Instead of an 180-page report with costly information that is not all relevant to the client, we “chop up” the information in bite-sized chunks for which a client can pay separately. A cafeteria-model meets freemium model, if you will. This will be an order of magnitude cheaper than current practices, and will bring maritime sustainability to those who cannot access it yet.
Our clients do not want to figure it out themselves. They want to worry about their work. We will worry about their sustainability issues. It saves them time. It saves them money. It saves them stress. Everyone is better off.
Reduced cost, as shipowners only pay for the advice, not the advisor.
It will make maritime sustainability accessible to shipowners who cannot access it yet.
Sustainable Ships makes a complex world easy to understand by serving as the starting point for a shipowner’s sustainable journey. We unburden the shipowner.
The difference
There is no other place in the world where a shipowner can get ‘instant sustainability’. Also, no one if focussing on ‘first aid for sustainability’, as virtually every other consultant or engineering agency has vested interest in performing detailed design analyses, or has the business model to ‘sell hours’. As far as we can tell, there is no true productized consultancy that focusses on marine sustainability, or one that has a free-to-use helpdesk. Moreover, our vision is to create a platform where we can enable others to make and share products while making money. Our ultimate goal is to create a ‘Spotify for Sustainability’, a place where anyone can make tools and provide services. There is no such place like it in the industry.
What makes us unique, is that there is no other organization that focusses on providing ‘first at for sustainability’ for the maritime sector on demand. There is no place in the maritime industry where you have such easy access to this kind of information.
What makes us even more unique, is that our ‘trick’ can reduce costs by more than 10x potentially. This will make it incredibly hard, if not impossible for legacy organizations to compete with. At the same time, we are at least 10x faster than others.
What makes us uniquest is our vision on revenue sharing in the future. Sustainable ships will be decentralized and collaborate platform, a place for anyone to share their knowledge and experience, while making money and getting leads for their business. It will be a marketplace of experts and - hopefully in the future - tools for shipowners to work with. It is a decentralized place for everyone to make money. That is the defining aspect of Sustainable Ships that makes it different than other platform.
